Returning From Whence They Came

Initially I wasn't going to comment on this but then I read Morena's post and well, if you've followed this blog for any length of time you know I never pass on an opportunity to rail against stupidity. Poor Ontario, earthquakes, tornadoes and then senseless violence brought on by protesters at the G20.

I grew up as a child of small business owners. Trust me on this....there is no secret conspiracy between government and business. I'll say it again....there is no secret conspiracy between government and business. Why then these violent protesters think they will accomplish anything productive by rampaging through downtown Toronto breaking shop windows and destroying property is beyond me. It's beyond disgusting that a group of cowardly thugs feel they have a right to endanger private property and an individual's right to run a business and carry on their livelihood. Yes, I realize that not all businesses affected are small "mom and pop" shops (I'm sure the big banks in the financial section of Toronto were specifically targeted) but surely some of them were. Replacing broken windows and signage surely isn't cheap. I'd be curious to know how many of these reprobates are in business for themselves. Probably none.

To the protesters I simply say this: Sorry, but if you are going to break, burn and pillage rather than protest peacefully, you belong in jail. Simple. And please don't ramble on against how police tactics are indicative of 1930's Nazi Germany. The two are simply not comparable. Kindly grow a brain, grab a history book and educate yourself before spouting off your tired old left-wing rhetoric.

Heck, if you want to protest. Go right ahead. But there are much more productive (and civil) ways of doing so. Don't take your rage out on people who are simply trying to earn a living.

I should add that I found it amusing to read that a group of protesters had found their way into Toronto's sewage system. Returning from whence they came I can only assume. Hopefully they stay there. Perhaps a few police will be so kind as to pick up a welding torch and make sure these protesters are snug in their new homes.

People who are smashing store windows and destroying property are comparing the POLICE to Nazis?

Hi there....I'm a long-time reader and first-time commenter. I appreciate and understand your latest rant but take a little umbrage at your use of 'left-wing'. I'm a proud left-wing citizen. What's happening in Toronto is sheer idiocy and the madness of a rioting collective clearly out of control.

I get what you're saying though.

Careful what the media portrays to the viewer. Ah, photo ops.
The police cars abandoned in the middle of the road (huh?), the lack of visible police presence was strange where they were everywhere else...which had me recalling this:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/08/23/police-montebello.html

Could they have done the same? To validate the $1B in security costs? To spur the black bloc on?
There was lots of anger shown and it saddened me. There were many who did not act out in violence. But through their signs and their words. Should this not be a message that the heads of state not hear? And not the gawking show that we have all become susceptible to being viewers of. The number of recording devices out was amazing...

I must say I find it a tad hypocritical of people to say that we shouldn't paint all protestors with the same brush, yet these same people have no qualms about taking one or two police incidents and inflating them to tarnish every police officer and law enforcement agency they can think of.

Thanks for the link! I'm glad you brought up the police issue. I avoided that since I thought it could seem biased given Nick's employer but I agree with you completely. I was also trying to get my point across without causing too much controversy. I'm glad not everyone is a coward like I am!

The widespread thought that there is a police conspiracy tires me.

No problem at all Morena. Controversy seems to follow me around so I've learned to embrace it....lol.

Anonymous....police conspiracy?!.....shhh!

I think our security should have been way tighter. Then this non-sense wouldn't have happened. I don't want G20 here in Canada every again, it's a waste of money, people go overboard and do stupid things with their riots, and it just makes everyone look bad.

What's wrong with arresting these people. There's protesting with signs, and then there's breaking the law---arrest these people!!!

Grrr...

p.s. Hahahaha, people comparing police to 1930's Nazi Germany---omg! It's kind of sad that people can be so presumptuous to even think of such a comparison. We will never understand the horror that happened during that period of time!

---And life moves on---

Calling Anonymous a hypocrite when they remind the writer that what you see/read in mainstream media is not the clear picture of what occurred - as is demonstrated in the reporting since. Montebello was used as example of what was not the truth at first.

I hope you've allowed yourself the opportunity to review alternate media sources. It is an enlightening wake up call. Asking questions is ok. Understandably many respond/react in defense, but a question is the first step on our thirst of knowledge and innovations.

It would be grand if the same energy was demonstrated against the perpetrators of the BP oil flow or the suits on wall street that messed with many peoples lives (ie. lost their homes) and yet they took home even higher bonuses this year. The problem is that these situations lead to no person/source to blame. So the thick paint brush is used to blame all "corporations" for the massive unbalance the world is in.

G20 and G8 are not the answer. They are an escape from what the UN is, formed by a hand picked group of nations. It represents nothing to the people. The $1B security budget was the cherry on top, to the surprise of even the mayor.

Sorry for the public service blurb, but no worries, I plan no acts of violence. If only the "black bloc" were educated in the practices of Gandhi.

I would agree that many large international organizations are a waste of time. However, breaking a window, vandalizing a police car and breaking the law is still breaking a window, vandalizing a police car and breaking the law no matter how you try to spin it. These groups are only trying to garner media attention anyway and now that the media are gone these "concerned citizens" have left the streets.
