2007 Canada Winter Games

Best wishes to all Nunavut athletes currently competing in the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, especially to Arctic Bay's own small contingent which will be competing in Dene Games.

The one Dene game I know they will be competing in is called Snow Snake. This is sort of like the javelin throw, except it involves sliding a stick or spear along a flat ice surface. It is decidedly more difficult than it sounds at first. I've tried this a number of times, believe me. One of the challenges is to keep the spear travelling in a straight line.

Although not indigenous to the Inuit, Dene Games have really taken off in Arctic Bay and we have athletes that have competed quite successfully in Snow Snake, most recently in the Arctic Winter Games in Alaska. Best wishes guys!

I can't wait to see the day when Arctic Bay sends a soccer team to the Games.
